Warrenton Bridge Construction across the Vaal River

In 2009, Enviroworks undertook a Basic Assessment (BA) process on behalf of the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) to assess the environmental impacts of the proposed construction of a new bridge across the Vaal River and the associated re-alignment of National Route N18 Section 1 (N18-1) at Warrenton in the Northern Cape Province. The BA process were undertaken in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (NEMA) (Act No. 107 of 1998) and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations of 2006. On the 23rd June 2010, the Department of Environmental Affairs issued the Environmental Authorization to SANRAL (the Applicant), which gave the Applicant consent to commence with construction in accordance with provisions of this authorization.

After the construction of a new bridge, Aquamulch minimised possible soil erosion on the bare verges through hydroseeding. A mixture of the following grass seeds were used: Antephora pubescens, Chenchrus Cilliaris, Chloris gayana, Digitaria eriantha, Eragrosits lehmanniana, Eragrostis teff and Ennepogon cenchroides.
